HOLLYWOOD SMILE

Dear Dr Birsen Yurdaer; could you please introduce yourself?

I am a dentist born in 1970 and graduated from the Marmara University Faulty of Dentistry in 1993. I finished master education at Goethe University Frankfurt am main de Oral Implantologie in 2011. I have concentrated on aesthetic dentistry throughout my profession. The main reason of having master education on implantology is the lack of aesthetic concern on implants and some dissatisfactions of implant cases.

Besides being a dentist, you are also known as an artist. What would you like to tell about your artist identity?

Having solo and group exhibitions, I have been working on painting, sculpture and relief for a long time. I suppose the art and dentistry interact and contribute each other. I work at my clinic all day, and concentrate on art at nights. I have two solo exhibition agreements in March: one at Nişantaşı Lebriz Art Gallery and the other abroad.

Let’s talk about “Hollywood Smile” which is so popular recently; what would you say for our readers?

First of all I should be stated that Hollywood Smile is given since Hollywood actresses/actors preferred firstly and mostly. On the other hand, aesthetic dentistry should be mentioned when talking about Hollywood Smile.

Golden proportion rules, in other words Da Vinci technique, are implemented in aesthetic dentistry. Only the beauty of the teeth is not enough for us; besides teeth and gingiva aesthetic, which is also called white and red aesthetic, the suitability of the teeth and gingiva to the lips, gender, smile line, midline of the face is aimed. It is possible to change all face look with just small touches on the teeth. Especially, younger and more dynamic look can be achieved by increasing the visibility of the teeth by laminas.

Our 20 year of clinic in Nişantaşı consists of ten professionals. I myself, my partner dentist Halil Yazıcı and our other dentist Elçin Güneysu concentrate on Hollywood Smile with a 10 person staff. All the stages of Hollywood Smile implementation is performed here in our clinic.

Working with this staff for a long time has added us speed and experience.It should never be forgotten that a dentist’s first responsibility is to protect the teeth while making smile design. Therefore, we try to design smile with thin porcelain laminas (porcelain veneers) without any cut on the teeth. When necessary, we just perform small touches but not more than 0, 5 mm.

To whom and how Hollywood Smile is performed?

Hollywood smile can be performed to any adult who is not happy or satisfied with the colour and/or the shape of their teeth. However there may be anatomical obstacles; the implementation in the maxilla is more frequent whereas the implementation in the mandible without any cut is less. Since the veneers are too thin and have the specialty of reflecting the colour, we generally perform after whitening the teeth.

How long do the implementation and recovery period take?

We generally finish in two sessions in our clinic: treating the teeth and gingiva and measuring the teeth takes approximately one hour. Two or three days later the veneers are pasted to the teeth.

There is no pain during these sessions. We provide a wide product range including different colours, stiffness, etc. While designing a smile, we may sometimes use several different products together. For instance, here veneer crone ivoclar e-max and empress ivoclar aesthetic ingot for lamina have been used together. Even though it may be regarded strange because of the huge visual difference, the patient gets accustomed in a few days. However, this is a positive difference; and positive smile brings more self-confidence.

As a last word, what would you share with our readers?

Besides defending everything to be natural as a dentist, I also claim that everyone has the right of having a beautiful smile a beautiful smile makes someone younger and contributes people dynamic and positive look.

However this smile should be both ideal and natural. Therefore, the smile design has a crucial importance. The aim of the dentist should always be to achieve the most beautiful and natural design. This can only be with necessary knowledge and aesthetic vision
